It had been hot for many weeks. The fans turned all day and still the rooms were warm. Everyone waited for the rain.

On Thursday afternoon the sky went dark. A cool wind blew the curtains. Then the first big drops fell on the dusty road.

Children ran out of their houses at once. They jumped in the puddles and shouted. Amma brought hot pakoras to the door, and even the old man on the corner stood up to watch.
