Learning tables without only chanting them
Reciting a table gets a child through this week's test, but it breaks down the moment the numbers appear out of order. Every table here carries a way to work the answer out — the 9 table is ten times minus the number, the 4 table is doubling twice, the 12 table is the 10 table plus the 2 table.
Knowing both matters. Recall is fast, and working it out is what rescues a child who has gone blank.
