My Dadi grows a garden on the terrace of our flat in Pune. She has no soil except what fits in old paint buckets and cracked buckets nobody wanted.

She never buys seeds. When we eat tomatoes, she saves the seeds and dries them on a plate near the window. When we finish a bunch of coriander, she plants the roots back in a pot.

The terrace gets very hot by eleven o'clock, so Dadi waters everything before six in the morning. She says water given at noon is water wasted, because the sun drinks it before the roots do.

Last month our kitchen used no tomatoes from the market at all. Dadi did not say anything about it, but she smiled every time Amma reached for the basket.
