On her way to school Priya heard a thin crying sound near the auto stand. She looked under a parked auto rickshaw and found a puppy, no bigger than her lunch box, pressed against the back wheel.

She could not reach it. The puppy backed further in whenever she put her hand out.

The auto driver, Salim bhai, came over. He did not pull the puppy out. Instead he fetched a steel bowl, poured a little milk into it, and set it down an arm's length away from the wheel. Then everyone stepped back and stopped talking.

It took a long time. At last the puppy crept out towards the bowl, and Salim bhai lifted it gently with both hands. Priya was twenty minutes late to school that day, and her teacher did not mind at all.
