Zero is a green parrot with a red tail. My grandfather gave him to me on my eighth birthday. At first he sat quietly on his perch, watching everything with his bright yellow eyes.
But Zero was learning. Every morning Grandfather would sit with him for an hour, teaching him words and sounds. By the second week, Zero could say "Good morning" and laugh like my mother.
Now Zero is the noisiest member of our house. He mimics the doorbell, the telephone ring, and even my father's cough. When we laugh, he laughs. When we eat, he squawks.
Last week Grandfather came for a visit, and Zero was so happy he spread his wings wide and danced on his perch. Grandfather smiled and said, "He remembers who taught him." I realised then that Zero had brought more than just colour to our house — he had brought us all closer together.
